Loving Arms

I wrote this song in 2012. My mom had called me to talk to me about one of my aunt’s, who was struggling with her mental health, to consult with me on what to do. Mom and I have worked on my own mental health through various means over the years. After the phone call I couldn’t get my aunt off my mind. My heart ached for her. Any one who has dealt with mental illness, or seen a love one go through it knows how terrifying and excruciating it can be. As a friend of mine once said to me, “It’s hell, isn’t it?” All I could say in response was, “Yes, it is.”

As I thought about my aunt and the pain she must be going through, I felt drawn to pen and paper and my piano. Melody and words began to come and the result was this song. Later I had access to Papa’s computer that had song writing software on it and I added a cello and flute part to it that really added to it. I bawled my eyes out when I listened to it with all the parts. This song was as much a gift to me as it is to anyone else who hears it. I regret that I don’t have a recording to put with this. Words carry so much more with music.

This song encompasses the heart of my testimony of my Savior’s role in my life and in the lives of those I’ve been witness to. I know that our Redeemer lives, and that He cares, and that He has a purpose for every troubling time that we will ever encounter. I hope on the dark and dismal day, when you need encouragement to go on another breath, another step that the words of this song and the tune will come to your mind. It was a gift from Heaven to me, and my aunt, when I was able to share it with her, and I hope it can be so for you as well. God bless!

Verse One

Know you not the story

Of our great Redeemer?

How He suffered in the garden?

How He hung upon the cross for you?

He lived and died not for His own sake

But to fulfill His Father’s will.

What great love!

What great love

Descends below each suffering!

From the end to the beginning

He loves and knows you.

He knows the path you’re treading;

He’s prepared the way through–

Receive the gift

He’s giving you,

Giving you.

Verse Two

Though your pain be black as hell

And these demons do oppose,

Know you not that Christ has conquered

Death and hell, all pain and sorrow?

He has born then all for you!

Below each He has descended

That He might know

How to succor you!

Loving arms!

Loving arms!

He holds you in His loving arms–

In your grieving,

In your aching;

He has born it all for you!

Let Him take it;

Let Him hold you;

Abiding grace

Just for you,

Just for you.

Verse Three

You may cry and shake your fist.

You may curse mortality.

This is not what you had bargained for!

If you had known you would have quit life’s scene!

How could a God of mercy

Allow such hell and depravity?

Eternal Plan and Covenant,

Eternal Life, Immortality!

All this suffering for God’s glory,

For His love of every man–

Drawing each and every child

To His bosom without end.

Is not this great?

Is not this good?

Trust in Him.

Verse Four

If we would be saviors

On the mount of Zion

It behooveth us to suffer

That we might bear up the souls of men.

If we would be as our Savior

We would have a cross to bear

Through which to know

How to succor men.

Redeeming Love!

Redeeming Love!

You have a part in Redeeming Love!

In your wounded condition

He has plans of joy for you!

Only when you bear His burden

Can His love flow free through you.

Oh praise His name

And rest in Him,

Rest in Him.

Eternal Plan and Covenant,

Eternal Life, Immortality!

From the end to the beginning

He’s prepared the way through.

Know that when you bear His burden

You will know His love for you!

Receive His gift

And praise His name,

Rest in Him.
